As with all things, ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’ and it is best to keep in mind that the effectiveness of web design is judged by those that use the website rather than the owners of it. There are a number of factors which affect the usability of a website and one should remember the advice of Steve Jobs who says that ‘Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.’
Websites that have been poorly designed tend to have less than favourable performance and their Google Analytics Metrics, which include high bounce rates, low site time and low conversions, suffer as a result. These principles are a guide to effective web design and are utilised by every one of the digital designers in the Xtra Digital team.
Goals digital design. What is the goal of your design? Professional web design always caters to the needs of the user. Are they looking for information, entertainment, some form of interaction or are they visiting your site to complete an online transaction. Every page on your site needs to be designed with a specific purpose in mind and interact with the rest of your site as effectively as possible.
Online users want their information as quickly as possible so it is important to keep your information easy to read and simple to digest. Information can be organised using headings and sub headings, bullet points instead of entire paragraphs and as little unnecessary information as possible.
There are certain fonts which do not work well on a website. These are generally those that are less contemporary and use decorative finishes. An example of this type of font is Broadway or Zapfino. It is better to use Sans Serif fonts, however one must keep in mind what image you are trying to portray. Using a ‘childish’ font like Comic Sans does not really suit your legal firm.
The colour palette used for your website goes long way to enhancing a users experience and also reinforces your brand image. Complementary colours such as green and blue create balance and harmony while contrasting colours such as green and purple will make it easier to read your content. Vibrant colours should be used sparingly as they evoke a more emotional response and white space is highly effective in creating an uncluttered appearance for your site.
There is no getting around the fact that a picture speaks a thousand words and is often more effective at getting your message across than the most beautifully written and engaging content you could create. Sometimes infographics and videos are also far more effective than actual copy.
This basically means how easy it is for a person to use your website to find what they are looking for. The most basic rule which governs navigation is the ‘three click rule’. Your design must be responsive and easy to navigate, if a user can’t find what they are looking for in three clicks or less they may leave your site and go somewhere else.
Most of the population reads from left to right and from top to bottom, if your design places important information in the bottom right corner it is highly likely that it will go unnoticed unless there is something drawing attention to it.
